Seven case studies are examined: Germany, Japan, Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. Presents lessons learned from each of these operations and draws implications for future U.S. nation-building operations, including Iraq. The authors conclude that rebuilding Iraq will be difficult but possible, and use historical perspective to illuminate today's headlines.
