Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 1968. - 158 pgs. These are the edited letters of Dr. Douglas A. Reid, now in the National Library of Wales. Reid was sent to the Crimean War as a twenty-one-year-old Assistant Surgeon only a few months out of medical school, and appointed to the 90th (Perthshire) Light Infantry. The observations of this inexperienced but articulate young officer, recorded in nearly eighty letters to members of his family, reflect the anxieties and frustrations of medical men in a particularly ugly war.
