The main provisions of the theory of rolling stock reliability are given; the main factors affecting reliability are highlighted; the physical processes of failures of rolling stock equipment, properties that characterize its reliability are considered; rolling stock reliability indicators, methods and practical examples of their calculation are presented; methods for calculating the reliability of complex systems, testing for reliability of rolling stock equipment are described; issues of ensuring the required level of reliability, analyzing the reliability of rolling stock equipment in operation are considered. It is intended for students of higher education institutions of railway transport studying in the direction of "Railway rolling stock".
