Social Structure and Change, Vol. 3: Complex Organizations and Urban Communities
Book information
Description
This book is the third in a series of five and comprises contributions concerning the social aspects of urbanization and industrialization, and the management of complex organizations in a transforming society. The distinguished contributors explore a range of issues including the impact of society on industry, the impact of technology on caste and status, the worldviews of administrators and industrialists, and the management of such organizations as universities. One theme of the text concerns the recent surge in economic liberalization and the resultant individualism, which gives rise to inconsistencies, dissension, and conflict. Additionally, the text explores how traditional values and cultures adapt to and in turn mold urban structures and processes. With that in mind, a major concern of the contributors focuses on the role played by traditional Indian institutions, especially caste, in the social behavior and attitudes of participants in today′s complex organizations and communities. Based on extensive fieldwork in different settings, this volume helps to develop a general perspective on urbanization, organization development, and social change. It will interest all those involved in the fields of sociology, social anthropology, urban studies, management, labor studies, and social change.
