A longish introduction explores the history of development of nursing in the modern medicine, and the structural sexual division of labour between the medicine and nursing, and explains how the functions of each is gendered. The book then goes into the history of nursing in India and the place that auxiliary nurses found in the public healthcare system. The book presents findings of a study of Auxiliary Nurse Midwives working at the subcentres and Primary Health Centres in the state State of Maharashtra in India. The study was conducted by authors from 1990-92.
