Description
This volume is the first of what the editors and the English Department hope will be an annual offering. Each issue will be planned around a single topic and will appear in the spring or early summer. It is the hope of the editors that Harvard English Studies will offer an opportunity for those who are or have been associated with Harvard and for others as well to express their views of literature, of particular works of literature, of the relation of literature to language and other subjects, and of literature’s social role and relations. Furthermore, we should like it to provide a forum for dealing with some of the current intellectual and social questions and problems which face English studies, both internally and externally. In short, we intend to be open to many approaches and subjects.
