Dieses Buch untersucht erstmals systematisch und umfassend Gestalt und Auswirkungen nationalsozialistischer Kulturpolitik in Tirol und Vorarlberg – vom "Anschluss" im März 1938 bis zum Ende des NS-Regimes im Mai 1945. In den Blick genommen werden sowohl die zentralen Institutionen und Akteure in der Region – von Gauleiter Franz Hofer über das führende Personal in der Reichsgauverwaltung bis hinab zu den Propagandisten und Kulturfunktionären in den Kreisen – als auch die zahlreichen heimischen "Kulturschaffenden", die sich eifrig in den Dienst des Nationalsozialismus stellten. Ein besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei der Funktion von "Volkskultur", Brauchtum und Schützenwesen als wirksame Identifikationsmittel. Besonders deutlich wird, wie Kultur und Kunst zur Mobilisierung der Massen genutzt wurden und wie einzelne kulturpolitische Initiativen des Regimes bis in die Gegenwart weiterwirken.
