The Spanish Civil War: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)
Book information
Description
Ms. Graham, a foreigner, pontificates in her---"a very short introduction"---that goes on for nearly 600 pages---about we stupid, backward, vast majority of Spaniards who loved our country, and its traditions. It is amazing that we backward peasants managed to defeat everything the International Communist order could throw against us! Yes, we allowed Germany and Italy to lend support---but only to counter the Communists who were flowing into our country from all over the world (yes--even from America---where members of the "Abraham Lincoln Brigade" would write home to their Marxist relatives in Brooklyn about how many nuns and priests they had killed)! Had the Communists won, they would have stayed forever; at the end of the civil war, Franco sent the Germans and Italians packing, and kept Spain absolutely neutral throughout WWII. He actively rescued hundreds of thousands of Jewish people, by freely issuing them Spanish identity cards. Had the Communists won in Spain, there would later have been no pretense of a "Vichy France"---Hitler would have just smashed through the rest of France, and conquered Spain---and would have murdered many thousands of Spanish people. This cold, self-satisfied, parochial Englishwoman doesn't write about that!
