Biotechnology: Products of Primary Metabolism, Volume 6, Second Edition
Book information
Description
Fermentation products of primary metabolism such as ethanol, acetic acid, and lactic acid were the first commercial products of the fermentation industry, followed by citric acid and related products of fungal origin. As high-volume/low-price products they still occupy top positions in the respective markets. Several of these, especially alcohols, have attracted additional attention as possible sources of alternative energy carriers and chemicals. This volume describes theory and practice of production of these commodities - from classical processes to most recent developments - and also provides data on the relevant raw materials. Futhermore, products related to primary metabolism are treated in this volume. Topics included are: Sugar-Based/Starch-Based Raw Materials - Ethanol - Glycerol and Other Polyols - Acetone, Butanol, Isopropanol - 2,3-Butanediol - Lactic Acid - Citric Acid - Gluconic Acid - Further Organic Acids - Acetic Acid - PHB and Other Polyhydroxyalkanoic Acids - Amino Acids - Nucleotides - Extracellular Polysaccharides - Biosurfactants Content: Chapter 1a Sugar?Based Raw Materials for Fermentation Applications (pages 4–29): Eberhard Stoppok and Klaus BuchholzChapter 1b Starch?Based Raw Materials for Fermentation Applications (pages 31–46): Jean?Claude De TroostemberghChapter 2 Raw Material Strategies – Economical Problems (pages 47–56): Friedrich Schneider and Horst SteinmullerChapter 3 Ethanol – Classical Methods (pages 58–120): Thomas Senn and Hans Joachim PieperChapter 4 Ethanol – Potential Source of Energy and Chemical Products (pages 121–203): Naim KosaricChapter 5 Microbial Production of Glycerol and Other Polyols (pages 205–227): Hans?Jurgen RehmChapter 6 Microbial Production of Acetone/Butanol/Isopropanol (pages 229–268): Peter Durre and Hubert BahlChapter 7 Microbial Production of 2,3?Butanediol (pages 269–291): Ian S. Professional Linux kernel architecture ''Wrox programmer to programmer''--Cover. - ''What you are reading right now is the result of an evolution over more than seven years: After two years of writing, the first edition was published in German by Carl Hanser Verlag in 2003. It then described kernel 2.6.0. The test was used as a basis for the low-level design documentation for the EAL4+ security evaluation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, requiring to update it to kernel 2.6.18 (if the EAL acronym does not mean anything to you, then Wikipedia is once more your friend). Hewlett-Packard sponsored the translation into English and has, thankfully, granted the rights to publish the result. Updates to kernel 2.6.24 were then performed specifically for this book''--P. ix
