No fictitious character since Sherlock Holmes has so captured the imagination of the public as has Ian Fleming’s famous Secret Service agent, Commander James Bond. The books about him are now selling in their millions, while the film adaptations have set new box- office records. Bond has literally become a household name throughout the civilized world: today he is a living, breathing man to all those who read about him. But what is it exactly about this twentieth- century phenomenon that makes him appear so real? Why is it that many other thriller heroes remain puppets, lay figures or crea- tures of straw and sawdust, and the amazing James Bond is as large as life—even larger than life, yet fully acceptable?
