Description

A rare genealogy book, the third (and final) edition of work examining an American family centered on a McCandlish lineage (originally of southwest Scotland), and also including the surnames: Armistead, Austin, Avery, Bliss,Bolling, Boltwood, Boume, Bowen/Bowne, Bowles, Bray, Brett, Brewster, Burbank, Caulkins, Coleman, Colton, Crowell, Edwards, Ervin, Gage, Griswold, Hall, Hansford, Hayward/Howard, Hitchcock, Huntley, Hyde, Isham, Keeney, Keep, Kibbe, King, Landstreet, Lee, Lindsay, Loomis, Merrill, Orme, Peters, Pocahontas, Randolph, Roberts, Rodenbush, Rogers, Rolfe, Russell, Sexton, Shedd, Sheild, Smith, Sweemer, Swink, Thayer, Thomas, Thompson, Turner, Walke, Warner, Welderly, Williams, Wilson, Wolcott, and Wood. Prominent members of the family include a number of attorneys in and around Virginia, and the artist and author Edward Gerstell McCandlish (plus a relation to Pocahontas). The work was assembled sectionally and has somewhat confusing arrangement, including discontiguous but related information in multiple sections. The genealogical information is probably reliable enough, though the heraldic claims are not (the heraldry presented was largely invented ca. 1850s–1920s within the branch in the US, and does not correspond closely with that found in reliable sources on heraldry). Certain pages attested in the table of contents do not exist in this copy of the book (from a microfilm), and might be missing from all copies. These include pp. 16-23 (that's p. 23 of sect. 16 , not pages 16 through 23), A-25, and A-26.
