Analysis of minerals and ores of the rarer elements
Book information
Description
3rd ed. — Hafner publishing company, NY, November 1955. - 408 p. 72 dpi OCR scanSince the second edition of this book appeared in 1940 almost all the so-called rarer elements have rapidly acquired considerable commercial importance, due mainly to the developments which have been brought about by the utilization of nuclear energy and to advances in the field of electronics. Simultaneously with all these advances, new techniques have been introduced into the analysis of many of these metals; probably the most important of these are chromatography for uranium, thorium, and the earth acids, polarography for uranium, europium, and ytterbium, solvent extraction for scandium and uranium, and spectrophotometry for the rare earths and platinum metals. In this edition all these methods have been included, together with many improvements in the classical methods. The chapters on the rare-earth metals, thorium, germanium, and niobium and tantalum have been extensively revised, while those on scandium, uranium, rhenium, and the platinum metals have been almost completely rewritten and contain many entirely new analytical methods.contents Introduction Mineralogical analysis Quantitative chemical analysis Complete chemical analysis Lithium Rubidium and cæsium Beryllium Scandium Gallium Indium Thallium The rare-earth metals Titanium Zirconium and hafnium Thorium Germanium Vanadium Niobium and tantalum Selenium and tellurium Molybdenum Tungsten Uranium Rhenium The platinum metals International atomic weights, 1953 Gravimetric factors Mineralogical index Analytical index
