Employs a version of the Selberg trace formula to illuminate the connection between the spectrum of certain elliptical differential operators, and the theory of zeta and theta functions for bundles on compact locally symmetric spaces and rank one. Also describes the theta function of Riemannian surfaces with cusps, and alternative descriptions of the singularities of the Selberg zeta functions in terms of Lie algebra and group cohomology.
