Originally written in 2012, when gay marriage was being hotly contested by religious crackpots, I focused in this essay upon how the government of the United States had persecuted the Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) in the latter half of the 19th century. What had the Mormons done to earn such brutality? They believed in what they called "plural marriage," that a man should have more than one wife. They also gave women the right to vote in 1870. That was only fifty years before the rest of America caught up with the notion. I should make plain that I am NOT a Mormon, nor am I an apologist for them; but I would bet that someone will accuse me of being a shill for them. Rottsa ruck.
