Mentoring today's nurses : a global perspective for success
Book information
Description
The focus of this book is mentoring within educational and health care settings, where nursing students and professional nurses must learn how to assess and negotiate multiple systems. Entering a new system, whether it is an educational environment or a health care environment, is conceptualized as a new culture. This book discusses various perspectives of mentoring, and, as the individual reader reflects upon the provided TIPS (thoughts, ideas, possible strategies), it presents strategies unique to each person regarding how to maximize the mentoring experience within a specific mentor structure. In this book, we have provided practical advice for how to mentor students at all levels within the educational system as well as new and seasoned nurses within health care systems as they assume new roles. Mentees/protégés will learn how to request and apply guidance from their mentors. Students will also receive advice on seeking out mentors and resolving issues when the relationships are not meeting their needs. As the environments in which we find ourselves become increasingly global, students and nurses in the United States and those coming to the United States have a variety of expectations and fears coupled with cultural, gender, and religious considerations that affect how they will function in a new society.
