The intention is to provide guidance on the correct interpretation of the Rules, with regard to the survey of chain during manufacture.As far as possible, the guide uses pictorial examples of imperfections in chain. It should be noted that acceptance or rejection is to be in accordance with the Rules and the images provided are only for guidance purposes.This guide is restricted to chain cable for ships, and covers stud link chain cable, short link chain cables and the more common fittings which are attached to them. The guide does not specifically relate to mooring chain cables although similar imperfections can potentially arise in them.The guide concentrates on the flash butt welding process for the manufacture of chain.
