Armagh, Ireland, October 13, 1945. After his education at Armagh and Maynooth, he was ordained in 1885. He was the first president of Dungannon Academy (1886–87), professor of moral theology and Sacred Scripture at Olton Seminary, England (1887–89), professor of Oriental languages at Maynooth (1889–1905), professor of NT exegesis at Maynooth (1905–15), and vice president of that college (1912–15). He was appointed bishop of Down and Connor in 1915, consecrated archbishop of Armagh in 1928, and raised to the cardinalate in 1929. One of the founders of the *Irish Theological Quarterly* (1906—), he served for a time as its coeditor. Besides his many articles for periodicals, he published commentaries on St. John's Gospel (1897) and the Epistles to the Corinthians (1915).
