Book information
Description
The publication processes, in the form of a catalog and scientific evaluation, buttons – typically hollow spherical clothing components made of metal found at central Great Moravian burial sites, which are often associated with the elite environment of the Great Moravia region (9th century). The work is based on the analysis of buttons using theoretical modeling and data comparison from various scientific fields. Technical and technological data related to the buttons were used for the analysis, compared with the age and gender of the individuals buried with them, and this information was placed within the spatial framework of the Great Moravian region. The study also monitored ideologically similar artifacts across Europe and into Central Asia. A key result of the work is the proposal of a mechanism for the transformation of the purpose of buttons in the former living culture, which can provide significant insights into the dynamics of the entire Great Moravian society. An important aspect of the work is also the verification of the possibilities of theoretical modeling and the method of comparing data from multiple scientific disciplines for the study of early medieval funerary sources.
