Jag sa att jag bodde i Hjulsta, för det var nästan sant och färre kände till namnet Hjulsta, det hade inte lika dålig klang. Jag flyttade till Tensta som nybliven mamma och tvingades ofrivilligt bort därifrån 17 år senare när äldsta sonen blev rånad, två gånger på en månad, precis utanför vårt hus. Men det var något som skavde i mig, något mer än sorgen över att behöva lämna vårt hem och oron för att vi inte skulle lyckas hitta någon likvärdig bostad någon annanstans. Jag kunde inte tåla att bara kasta allt överbord och lämna skeppet som en skräckslagen råtta. Jag behövde ta reda på varför vi måste fly. Hur blev det så här i Tensta? Så började min granskning av förorten, segregationen, Sverige, svenskarna och vårt förhållningssätt till de problem som finns i vårt land."
