Russian Jazz: New Identity is the first comprehensive survey of the new improvised music of the Soviet Union. Taking up the story where Red & Hot left it the end of the seventies, this collection of essays documents what its editor, Leo Feigin, refers to as 'an incredible explosion' of musical activity based not on American jazz ('the manifestation and expression of someone else's freedom') but on an aesthetic peculiar to Russia, deeply rooted in both its pre revolutionary culture and its post-revolutionary avantgarde. The contributors include S. Frederick Starr himself; Efim Barban, doyen of the new music's apologists; Norman Weinstein, US critic, poet and Jungian therapist; the UK's John Fordham, jazz critic of the Guardian; West German Hans Kumpf, musician and regular visitor to the USSR; Virgil Mihaiu, Romanian literary critic and poet; and Bert Noglik, distinguished East German critic and author. In addition, there are interviews with the musicians themselves, accounts of their live performances in the USSR and Western Europe, and a frank history of Leo Records, the music's main outlet in the West. The collection thus provides a rich, multifaceted survey of the phenomenon and is essential reading both for lovers of improvised music and for anyone interested in the complex interaction between the state and the artist.
