'Work on this book started in 1971 at the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile. It had to be interrupted soon afterwards as a result of the increasing severity of a political crisis that, although external to the normal activities of the institute and the university, eventually brought both to a virtual standstill. It was resumed more than a year later in the Department of Sociology of La Trobe University in Melbourne. However, I was only able to complete it under the auspices of a generous fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, which, taken together with sabbatical leave from La Trobe University, enabled me to devote the whole of 1976 to research and writing.'
