Description

Environmental Management is a broad and rapidly expanding field, crucial to the well-being of humans and the maintenance of environmental quality. Human impact on the environment is causing widespread concern and successful management is vital for maintaining the Earths biodiversity. Environmental Management: Principles and Practice sets out guidelines for the formulation of environmentally-sound development policies which seek the best possible environmental option to promote sustainable development. It draws together the common themes which run through the various fields of environmental management and areas of application which include: the precautionary principle; the polluter-pays principle; a multi-disciplinary and anticipatory approach; the goal of sustainable development; assessment of risks, hazards and impacts; and environmental stewardship. The author stresses how environmental on the management may be pursued by individuals, companies, governments, NGOs and international bodies such as the UN Environmental Programme.
