Aimed at upper undergraduate and beginning graduate students, this text explores the universal physical and mathematical principles that govern the emergence of complex systems from simple components. Bar-Yam uses both analytic tools (such as stochastic dynamics) and computer simulation techniques to develop models that may be applied to all complex systems. Sample systems discussed range from tiny neural networks in the brain to the global economy. The author teaches molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University.
