Già da tempo oggetto di studio dell'economia, solo di recente il commercio internazionale è divenuto terreno di indagine specifica delle discipline politologiche, interessate soprattutto alle ricadute sociali dei suoi effetti redistributivi interni e al suo ruolo nella promozione di interessi strategici in politica estera. Significativamente sono i periodi di crisi internazionale a stimolare l'avvicinamento dei due tipi di analisi, economica e politica, suggerendo che la criticità delle contingenze spinge a interrogarsi in maniera congiunta sulla natura complessa del fenomeno commerciale, in riferimento sia al legame tra stato e mercato, sia ai rapporti tra stati in mercati diversi. In questo filone di studi si inserisce il presente volume, che illustra i risultati di un'ampia e approfondita ricerca intesa a valutare il peso delle determinanti politiche nei flussi commerciali internazionali.
