على مسرح أحداث واسع يمتدّ من مصر إلى باكستان، يستعرض المؤلّف بدايات عهد الملك سعود، ونهوض الجيش التركي، وتأميم المنشآت النفطية في إيران، وقيام دولة إسرائيل، وثورة يوليو في مصر، ويحلّل أزمة الأردن في آب/أغسطس 1957 التي أسفرت عن انقسام الشرق إلى معسكرين متخاصمين: (التحالف المقدّس) للملوك ضدّ الجمهوريات التقدّمية، على خلفية اشتداد المنافسة بين الولايات المتّحدة والاتحاد السوفياتي. تتّضح قيمة الكتاب باعتباره وثيقة هامّة توضح مواقف الملك تجاه حلف بغداد، وقضية البريمي، والقومية العربية، ومشروع أيزنهاور، وأزمة السويس وقطع العلاقات ووقف إمدادات البترول عن فرنسا وبريطانيا ونتائجها على الاقتصاد السعودي. يملأ هذا الكتاب فراغاً كبيراً في المكتبة العربية والتاريخ العربي المعاصر للشرق الأوسط. ويسلَّط الضوء على ما يدعوه المؤلف (الشرق في زمن التحولات)، فيصف جملة الأزمات والانقلابات المتقاطعة منذ أواخر الحرب العالمية الثانية حتى شهر آب/أغسطس 1957. جاك بونوا ميشان كاتب ومؤرّخ وصحفي فرنسي. اتّجه في أواخر حياته إلى كتابة تاريخ العالم العربي، ومنه تدوين تاريخ آل سعود. فأصدر كتباً عدّة في هذا الاتجاه، منها (ميلاد مملكة أو ابن سعود) و (الملك فيصل)؛
