It involved an 18-day struggle between the Kauravas and the Pandavas. King Bishma had no heirs, because he had taken an oath of celibacy, but through an arranged union between two WOMEN and the son of his stepmother each woman bore a son. One was King Dhiritarashtra; the other was called Pandu. Sons of the former were the Kauravas, the forces of darkness; sons of the latter were named the Pandavas, the forces of light. The Kauravas seized power, leading to the Battle of Kurukshetra. Numerous epic duels charged with chivalry as well as deceit followed until the forces of light triumphed. It is not difficult to trace parallels between this and other epic battles and those involving ANGKOR and the Chams. The realistic and vigorous depiction of the Battle of Kurukshetra at Angkor Wat incorporates many of the themes, such as the death of King Bishma on a bed of arrows. See also CHAM CIVILIZATION.
