The Turn of the Century/Le tournant du siècle: Modernism and Modernity in Literature and the Arts/Le modernisme et la modernité dans la littérature et les arts
Book information
Description
Modernism and modernity are key-concepts for an understanding of twentieth-century culture, art and literature. Because of their indistinctness and the ambiguous use that is beeing made of these terms in comparist discussions, they create confusion rather than anything else. Starting from this terminological vagueness, this book aims to confront views and analyses so as to elucidate and clarify the concepts in question. These issues are addressed by some of the most important critics working in this field: Roger Bauer, Matei Calinescu, Yves Chevrel, Wladimir Krysinsky, Jean Weisgerber, Ulrich Weisstein. The contributions range from terminological exposes to careful studies of a selection of modern artists, and treat writers ranging from canonical (Hofmannsthal, Rilke, Madelstam, Eliot, Apollinaire, Proust, Strawinsky, Kandinsky) to the marginal nearly forgotten Ronald Firbank. Themes as the flaneur, Tristan, the city, anarchism, technology in modernims are analysed.
