70 years of caricature in Iran (سیر تحولات 70 سال کاریکاتور در ایران)

این کتاب حاوی 339 تصویر کاریکاتوری از مجله ها و روزنامه های رسمی ایران است که طی اولین سال های تاسیس مطبوعات در ایران گردآوری و به ترتیب سال انتشار مرتب شده است .ذیل هر تصویر اطلاعات مختلفی از قبیل موضوع کاریکاتور، سال چاپ، ماخذ و کاریکاتوریست آمده است .در بخش انتهایی کتاب مقدمه ای به زبان انگلیسی به طبع رسیده است. From the first year of my student days at the Faculty of Fine Arts, I attended one of the old and well-known galleries of Iran. Later, we formed four groups, where I was active continuously in the research group. This gallery was the only exhibition in Iran, that provided extra-curricular activities. First, we would think of a project, carry out the necessary studies and research, then, set up an exhibition and submit our research findings on a large scale while exhibiting the works. One of our projects was to exhibit paintings by the forgotten artists of the traditional "teahouses". For this purpose, we studied a great deal, carried out much research and collected many works which because they had long been stored in the tea-houses, were completely darkened and dull, to the point that were hardly recognizable. Only after much hard work and preparation by our colleagues, were they ready for exhibition. We then studied and worked a great deal on puppetshows, the socio-political art of Iran, as well as miracle plays. These exhibitions continued for many years in the gallery. Research on modem Iranian poetry, prose and satire was later carried out; many nights were spent reciting poetry, stories and satire in the following years and this pattern continued. One of the attractive projects that we were engaged in, was the work done on caricature and satire in Iran. In the first place, this work was important to us because it meant working in a gallery. Having carried out extensive research and collected illustrations and caricatures, we decided on setting up a valuable exhibition, especially as no other exhibition on caricature works had ever been set up in Iran until that time. We began our work by searching the big libraries of Tehran; however, their archives were so limited, incomplete, useless and despairing that we had to tum to the libraries of other large cities such as Tabriz and Shiraz. After that we searched specialist libraries and visited collectors, culture-loving families and so on. (Anyone who has ever carried out research in Iran and about Iran, will understand better the processes and shortfalls of this kind of searching). We encountered many problems. Sometimes, to just find one illustration or caricature, or a particular person (who had a required source), I had to search everywhere, even abandoned stores and as I traveled on a "student" budget, it made the task even more difficult. After one year, I managed to find the whereabouts of editors-in-chief, illustrators and the pioneers of caricature. Meeting and interviews were arranged with these "hard-workers", renewing hopes in me and encouraging me to continue this work. The families of Nahid, Reza Ganjehey, Rooh Allah Davary and others specially helped in my work. Although this continuous collecting, research and reviewing took three years, but a rare collection was accomplished as a result. A heap of published newspapers, great many photographed illustrations, interview tapes and eventually about 6ooo original caricatures were collected in the archive. One year of exhibitions . A series of remarkable exhibitions were set up one after the other, under the title, "70 Years Caricature in Iran". These exhibitions were set up in the gallery as the First caricature Festival in Iran, for a complete year. (17 exhibitions in all). These exhibitions continued for many years inside the universities of Tehran and other cities, as well as schools and mosques~ At the end of the one year exhibitions, a booklet portraying 70 of the best chosen caricatures in the from of postcards with related brochures, was published. I then began compiling a book titled, "Changes in Caricature in Iran". This book with 700 pages, which took almost a year to complete and in fact formed the basis for the present book, in many respects forced me to carry out more studies and research. In writing the present book, I was inspired by the great works of hundreds of writers, poets and caricatunsts, carried out in almost three quarters of a century and whom have no doubt left a valuable heritage for the Iranian nation.
