「 我在開始寫這本書的時候，關心的其實不是現在，而是過去。我想要重塑香港的歷史，讓香港人自己講述他們自己的故事，而不是繼續由殖民統治者代替他們敘述。當時我並沒有料到，中國共產黨會如此迅速地試圖改寫現在，它不僅強行改變視角，甚至還扭曲焦點。中共這些作為讓人迷失方向，我在這本書記錄下來的每一個當下時刻，反客為主成了重中之重。」──林慕蓮，中文版序對英國政府而言，香港是一張沒有歷史、沒有過往的白紙，英國前首相巴麥尊子爵說它是塊「荒蕪的礁岩」，前港英總督寶靈爵士說它是「亂源的溫床」，柴契爾夫人認為香港只是牌桌上的籌碼。對中國政府而言，香港是中國自古不可分割的一部分，是近百年國家恥辱的根源，1997年回歸祖國是歷史時勢，沒有討論的空間，也沒有改變的可能。在這其中，香港人都沒有置喙的餘地，如同鄧小平所說的：「中英的談判會由中國和英國解決……過去所謂三腳凳（中英港），沒有三腳，只有兩腳（中英）。」當2019年反送中運動在香港風起雲湧、鎮壓不斷升級時，本書作者、長年報導書寫中國議題的林慕蓮，開始深入研究香港歷史文獻，卻發現香港人在港英政府、中共政權的統治下，是如此缺乏自我的身分認同，歷史記憶是如此殘缺不全，遭到竄改，「我們是誰？我們正在捍衛的是什麼？然後我們開始討論什麼是香港的核心價值。」最終，林慕蓮試圖要脫離官方定義，不管是英國人還是中國人的歷史框架，她想為香港書寫一部歷史，一部由香港人自己來詮釋的歷史。而這一切的起頭，將由一位有人說他是街頭藝術家，有人說他是書法家，更有人說他是瘋子的「九龍皇帝」曾灶財開始談起。曾灶財宣稱自己是土地的主人，香港的國王，用他手中的筆跟墨，五十年來孜孜不倦地「宣示主權」。九龍皇帝如同一個象徵，當年用肉身占領街頭的香港人，試圖奪回自己的歷史和記憶的香港人，在海外持續挑戰中共管控的香港人，接下來還需要更多決絕的毅力跟反抗的意志。
