Disney R.H.L. A Key to the larvae, pupae and adults of the British Dixidae (Diptera). The meniscus midges
Book information
Description
Freshwater Biological Association, 1975. — 78 p.Scientific Publication No. 31.Some groups of organisms have been neglected by freshwater biologists, often because there is no readily available guide to their taxonomy. A result of this, particularly for those groups with relatively few species, is that their biological interest or ecological significance cannot be properly assessed. The Association has studied, by the publication of simple yet accurate and workable keys, to remedy this situation both for the smaller and more obscure groups as well as those of more obvious importance. The present key to the Dixidae is a good example of the results of this policy.Although he has been a professional entomologist, Dr Disney's studies on the Dixidae and the preparation of this key have been spare-time activities for him. We hope that his efforts will be rewarded by the stimulation of others to take up the study of the 'meniscus midges. Those who do are referred to Dr Disney's request for specimens and records given on p. 63. The publication of distribution maps based on relatively scanty data can be misleading, yet such maps can encourage others to try to 'fill in the gaps', and thus, by sending their data to the author, help to improve subsequent editions.
