The Institute of Environmental, Management and Assessment sets standards for environmental practitioners in the United Kingdom; editor Brady, affiliated with that organization, brings together the work of 35 contributing authors for this handbook. It is intended as a text for students seeking IEMA certification and a reference for certified environmental practitioners involved with business and government. About one-third of the material - on European Union and UK law - is not precisely relevant for US practitioners, but the balance does apply. Discussion begins with the earth's natural systems, the global environment, and sustainable development. Following is coverage of issues facing organizations in managing environmental performance, including pollution prevention, environmental impacts of product development and of packaging and waste, evaluation tools, communicating with stakeholders, and land contamination.
