A Critical Edition of Thomas III, marquis of Saluzzo’s Le Livre du Chevalier Errant
Book information
Description
This is the first edition of the entire text of Thomas' allegorical romance written in 1394 in a combination of verse and prose. The text is prepared from the two surviving copies, Paris, B.N. fr. 12 559 and Torino, B.N ms L.V.6., using the Paris manuscript as the base and working from microfilm copies. All significant variants are either used to correct the text of the base manuscript (in instances of incorrect meter, rhyme, or grammar, and corrupt sense) or included in the critical apparatus. Both manuscripts are illustrated, the Paris one lavishly. It was probably commissioned by the author as his personal copy. Although there is some evidence that Thomas revised parts of his text and that the Torino manuscript reflects these revisions, this manuscript is damaged and incomplete. A third manuscript is known to have existed. The introduction to the edited text contains six chapters. The first presents pertinent biographical information about the author. The second provides detailed descriptions and histories of the manuscripts and discusses the relationship between them. The third and fourth deal briefly with the language of the text and its content and structure respectively. The fifth discusses the illustrations and a related series of frescoes. The sixth contains a statement of editorial procedures and explains the presentation of the text. Internal evidence and available external information are used to deduce dates of production for both manuscripts which are undated. A bibliography, addenda (birth notices added later on the verso of the last folio of the Paris manuscript) and ten tables follow. The edited text is preceded by a table of contents (consisting of the chapter titles found only in the Torino manuscript) and includes foliation from both manuscripts and descriptions of all of the illustrations in the position of the scenes in the text. Rejected readings, expunctuations, variants, and a few textual notes are grouped in a single critical apparatus at the bottom of the page and presented in the order encountered in the text. A complete list of proverbs, a fully referenced index of names with brief identification, and a selective glossary follow the text.

Professional Linux kernel architecture ''Wrox programmer to programmer''--Cover. - ''What you are reading right now is the result of an evolution over more than seven years: After two years of writing, the first edition was published in German by Carl Hanser Verlag in 2003. It then described kernel 2.6.0. The test was used as a basis for the low-level design documentation for the EAL4+ security evaluation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, requiring to update it to kernel 2.6.18 (if the EAL acronym does not mean anything to you, then Wikipedia is once more your friend). Hewlett-Packard sponsored the translation into English and has, thankfully, granted the rights to publish the result. Updates to kernel 2.6.24 were then performed specifically for this book''--P. ix
