From Martha Washington to Jill Biden, America’s first ladies remain some of the most influential women in the world. While the position doesn’t come with a defined set of duties, and each first lady has approached her job differently, the post typically involves acting as the official White House host and interacting with the political and civic life of the nation. In this capacity, FLOTUS organizes formal events such as state dinners, champions social causes, and, with her fashion choices, even impacts the way women dress. In this special edition, LIFE celebrates the 54 first ladies who have served our country since its founding. Some have operated quite publicly, like Eleanor Roosevelt campaigning for civil rights and Betty Ford with her support of the Equal Rights Amendment; others have worked behind the scenes, like Nancy Reagan, who was involved in Reagan administration staffing decisions. A handful have been so beloved for their work and character, they’ve been embraced as cultural icons: think Abigail Adams, Jackie Kennedy, Barbara Bush, and Michelle Obama. Today, as the position of first lady continues to evolve (Jill Biden is the first to hold a paying job outside the White House), these women still serve as role models to young and old, male and female alike, admired around the globe for their contributions to society.
