States in the Developing World
Book information
Description
What should states in the developing world do and how should they do it? How have states in the developing world addressed the challenges of promoting development, order, and inclusion? States in the developing world are supposed to build economies, control violence, and include the population. How they do so depends on historical origins and context as well as policy decisions. This volume presents a comprehensive theory of state capacity, what it consists of, and how it may be measured. With historical empirical illustrations it suggests that historical origins and political decisions help drive the capacity of states to meet their goals. 03.0_pp_iv_iv_Copyright_page 04.0_pp_v_vi_Contents 05.0_pp_vii_x_Contributors 06.0_pp_xi_xii_Figures 07.0_pp_xiii_xiv_Tables 08.0_pp_xv_xvi_Preface_and_Acknowledgments 09.0_pp_1_32_Unpacking_States_in_the_Developing_World_Capacity_Performance_and_Politics 10.0_pp_33_154_Order_and_Reach 10.1_pp_35_62_The_Nationalist_Origins_of_Political_Order_in_India_and_Pakistan 10.2_pp_63_92_Violence_Fragmented_Sovereignty_and_Declining_State_Capacity_Rethinking_the_Legacies_of_Developmenta 10.3_pp_93_120_Unpacking_the_States_Uneven_Territorial_Reach_Evidence_from_Latin_America 10.4_pp_121_154_Dictatorship_and_the_State_A_Comparison_of_State_Building_and_State_Plunder_in_South_Korea_the_Phili 11.0_pp_155_306_Economic_Development 11.1_pp_157_183_Bureaucratic_Capacity_and_Political_Autonomy_Within_National_States_Mapping_the_Archipelago_of_Excel 11.2_pp_184_216_State_Capacity_History_Structure_and_Political_Contestation_in_Africa 11.3_pp_217_247_The_Origins_of_State_Capacity_in_Southern_Africas_Mining_Economies_Elites_and_Institution_Building_i 11.4_pp_248_279_Economic_Liberalization_Electoral_Coalitions_and_Investment_Policies_in_India 11.5_pp_280_306_Do_Weberian_Bureaucracies_Lead_to_Markets_or_Vice_Versa_A_Coevolutionary_Approach_to_Development 12.0_pp_307_422_Inclusion_and_Equity 12.1_pp_309_338_Development_in_the_City_Growth_and_Inclusion_in_India_Brazil_and_South_Africa 12.2_pp_339_362_Campaigns_of_Redistribution_Land_Reform_and_State_Building_in_China_and_Taiwan_19501953 12.3_pp_363_379_State_Capacity_and_the_Construction_of_Pro-Poor_Welfare_States_in_the_Developing_World 12.4_pp_380_408_The_Political_Foundations_of_State_Effectiveness 12.5_pp_409_422_Conclusion 13.0_pp_423_466_References 14.0_pp_467_476_Index
