In reviewing the currentstate of speech recognition and speech processing technology and by examining anumber of voice-interactive CALL applications, we suggest how to create robustinteractive learning environments that exploit the strengths of speech technologywhile working around its limitations. In the conclusion, we draw on our review ofthese applications to identify directions of future research that might improve boththe design and the overall performance of voice-interactive CALL systems.
