The present volume is the only extensive bibliography of fantastic fiction. It is a thorough revision and enlargement of The Checklist of Fantastic Literature, which on its first appearance some thirty years ago was acclaimed as an indispensable reference tool. For the present revised edition, every title in the first Checklist was rechecked for bibliography and suitability of subject matter. Many corrections have been made, many borderline books dropped, and more than 1100 new titles added, making a total of some 5600 books described. For each book the following information is given: author, pseudonyms, title, variant or changed titles, first edition publication data and similar material. A new feature added to this second edition, to make the book more useful, is indication of subject matter for individual books. More than 90 different categories (plus many multiple combinations) indicate the precise contents of about 95% of the books included. The Checklist of Science-Fiction and Supernatural Fiction is particularly valuable because of its time span, 1800 to 1948. During this period the publication of fantastic fiction was scattered and erratic (as opposed to the planned programs of later years), and bibliographic guidance is necessary. This is also the era of most interest to library formation, and certainly the time period of the most valuable collectible books.
