Description

This illustrated guide is the first comprehensive classification of vessel glass found in England between 1500-1670. During the early post-medieval period, vessel glass was transformed from a rare luxury item to a medium that was used by the wider population. Recent years have seen an increase in the archaeological excavation of post-medieval sites and a growing interest in the material culture of the period. The book provides a clear and accessible coverage of vessel forms and individual types - with an indication of their date range, provenance and a description. Each form is illustrated with an excavated example and there is a general summary of the types with reconstruction drawings at the end. The Research Report also addresses how post-medieval glass should be studied, summarises current information on the production and importation of vessels in England and provides a social context for glass use.
