Description

Chile is a narrow strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and the high peaks of the Andes, stretching 4,300 kilometres from Peru to Cape Horn. It has one of the most varied geographies in the world, including deserts, snow-covered volcanoes, tranquil lakes and forests, and windswept fjords and glaciers. Chile's capital Santiago is South America's fourth-largest city. And there are two Chilean outposts in the Pacific: Easter Island, famous for its mysterious stone statues, and the Juan Fernandez Islands, which were the temporary home for the Scotsman whose experiences were the inspiration for Robinson Crusoe. Although the Chilean army and police have a high profile, the people are friendly and hospitable. Travel is easy and safe, and the possibilities are as varied as the countryside.
