On October 5, 6, and 7, 1964, a conference organized by the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace, on the general subject of "One Hundred Years of Revolutionary Internationals," met at Stanford University. Thirty-five European and American scholars, mainly historians and political scientists, presented papers and comments on a variety of subjects related to the revolutionary movements that for a hundred years have claimed direct ideological kinship with the International Workingmen's Association - the First International - founded in London on September 28, 1864. The conference participants sought to analyze dispassionately the variety of Marxist movements that have so profoundly affected the destiny of mankind during the last century. The essays collected in this volume are for the most part slightly revised and updated versions of the papers presented and discussed during the second day of the conference. The papers from the other two days of the conference will appear in two separate volumes, each of which, it is hoped, will form a coherent, topical whole. In presenting this book to the public I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Gene Tanke and Mrs. Muriel Davison of Stanford University Press, whose editorial competence and intellectual alertness have been a great help in tying together this volume.
