Book information
Description
The book offers a critical examination of the origins and development of the philosophy of sport as a distinct branch of general philosophy. It highlights key milestones and turning points in the field while also anticipating future directions for both sport and the philosophy of sport—particularly in its two most prominent subfields: ethics of sport and bioethics of sport. This book offers a comprehensive philosophical exploration of sport, focusing on its conceptual foundations, ethical dimensions, and bioethical challenges. It is structured into seven main chapters: 1. What is Sport? Definitions and conceptual analyses of sport. Key ideas by Bernard Suits on play, game, and sport. Concepts such as fair play, competition, the spirit of sport, integrity, and the Olympic ideal. A critical reflection on attempts to define sport. 2. Philosophy of Sport The nature and scope of sport philosophy. Historical development: from ancient roots (e.g., Homer, Plato, Aristotle) to its disciplinary formation in the 20th century. Key turning points and the internationalization of the discipline. 3. The Role of William J. Morgan Morgan’s contributions to sport ethics and critical social theory. Topics include corruption in sport, moral parallels between society and sport, and deliberative processes influenced by Habermas. A critical evaluation of Morgan’s thought and legacy. 4. Ethics of Sport Definition and scope of sport ethics. Main areas and classifications within sport ethics. Key developments and future directions. Normative Theories of Sport Exploration of major normative frameworks: formalism, conventionalism, internalism (including various versions such as interpretivism and mutualism). Discussion on intrinsic values in sport and their significance. Reflection on the essence and ethos of sport. 3. Bioethics of Sport Overview and history of bioethics in sport. Narrow (biomedical/biotechnological) vs. broad (life-centered) conceptions of bioethics. Case studies and key issues: doping, enhancement, cyborg athletes (e.g., Oscar Pistorius), gender and sex (intersex and transgender athletes), and the impact of COVID-19. Future outlook on sport and emerging ethical dilemmas. Philosophy, Ethics, and Bioethics of Sport in Croatia Academic teaching, publications, and conferences in Croatia. 6.
