Description

Einschneidend für die europäische Erfahrungsgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts war die Katastrophe der Zerstörung traditionsreicher Großstädte während des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Sie forderte lokale Eliten und Öffentlichkeiten heraus, den Wiederaufbau im Konsens zu beginnen und als ein Langzeitprojekt fortzuführen. Unter Einsatz aller verfügbaren Ressourcen bemeisterten die Stadtgesellschaften die Herkulesaufgabe einer Wiederherstellung ihrer Urbanität aus Trümmern. Dies geschah aber auch durch die oft umstrittene Rekonstruktion von Wahrzeichen und von unverwechselbaren Stadträumen, bisweilen auch von Stadtquartieren. Dieser Band europäischer und US-amerikanischer Historiker/innen eröffnet eine europäische Vergleichsperspektive auf den Wiederaufbau der Städte. Analysiert werden die Identitätspolitik, die mediale Inszenierung und die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Städtebau der Moderne. Fallbeispiele sind die lokalen Diskurse über den Wiederaufbau in London, Le Havre, Rouen, Hannover, Pforzheim, Frankfurt/Main, Lübeck, Schwedt, Warschau, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Hildesheim, Philadelphia (USA), West- und Ost-Berlin, Tallinn, Brescia und Mailand.
