In diesem Buch werden Aspekte der Nomadenkultur und der Handwerkstraditionen in Damzhung in Zentraltibet aus einer Reihe wissenschaftlicher Perspektiven betrachtet, darunter technische, räumliche, ökologische, wirtschaftliche und soziale Dimensionen. Das Buch blickt über den tibetischen Kulturraum hinaus und vergleicht die handwerklichen Traditionen der Nomaden in anderen Regionen, darunter in der Mongolei, im Iran und in der Türkei, sowie in weiteren ausgewählten Regionen Westasiens und Nordafrikas mit einem besonderen Schwerpunkt im Bereich der Schwarzhaarzelte. Die Prozesse der Herstellung, des Baus und der Instandhaltung in nomadischen Gesellschaften manifestieren sich in lokalen Handwerkstraditionen. Diese beziehen die lokale Gemeinschaft mit ein und sind an die vorherrschenden Umweltbedingungen und anthropogenen Faktoren angepasst. Technisches Wissen und praktische Fertigkeiten in Bezug auf eine Reihe von Handwerken werden innerhalb lokaler Traditionen bewahrt, verfeinert, angepasst und weitergegeben, was uns zu der Feststellung führt, dass es sich bei Wohnpraktiken und beim Bauhandwerk um Prozesse handelt, welche im Kern der nomadischen Kultur und des täglichen Lebens zusammenwirken.
