Description

The cultural phenomenon of vampirism, as the author discovered, occurs on all continents, and therefore, due to the broad scope of the topic, he focused on European countries. He deliberately avoided literary characters of vampires and bloodsuckers, including the famous Count Dracula, as they lie outside of folkloric traditions. Instead, the focus here is on popular superstitions, customs, and rituals associated with vampires, revenants, werewolves, and plagues—restless souls of the dead who return to the living and harm them. The study also presents examples of specific historical reports, mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries, about discoveries of vampire graves. The work is notable, among other things, for the author's identification with the Czech scholarly tradition in the field of vampirism.
