Volume 9 covered the colors and markings of Navy A-7s based on the Atlantic coast, while Volume 15 presented a look at the Navy's Pacific coast squadrons. In this new publica­tion, we turn our attention to the A-7 Corsairs that have served with the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard.After realizing that it needed a dedicated ground attack aircraft during the war in Vietnam, the U.S. Air Force first opted to acquire some existing Navy A-1 Sky-raiders. But a more permanent solution was needed, and again the Air Force turned to the Navy The A-7 Corsair was already in production for use aboard aircraft carriers, and the Air Force adapted the design for its own needs. The result was the A-7D variant, which became the Air Force's only single-seat version of the Corsair.
