Description

This book presents a coherent discussion of [then] existing varieties of cyclic particle accelerators - cyclotrons, synchrocyclotrons, synchrotrons, betatrons, microtrons, linear accelerators, and isochronous and strochastic machines - and describes them in sufficient detail to show their principles of operation, similarities, differences and limitations. the problem of orbit stability receives emphasis, with discussions of weak-, strong-, and sector-focusing techniques and with calculations of the frequencies of the associated oscillations of the orbits The important concepts of momentum compaction, phase stability and synchrotron oscillations are described and analyzed, and certain problems of injection and ejection are considered. The treatment follows the development of accelerators from the simpler to the more complex. An uninitiated reader (who is assumed to understand the calculus) is led through the advances which have occurred over the years, up to the point where he has gained a solid understanding of the underlying principles and has become equipped to read more intelligently the many articles on the subject which appear in the scientific journals. A bibliography of about 500 items is arranged by type of accelerator, as an aid in collateral reading for those who may wish to delve deeper into theoretical aspects or to learn constructional details of particular installations.
