R~search on police behavior has increased dramatically during the past fifteen years. This course-oriented anthology of eighteen recent studies—including sections on the problems which bring patrol officers and citizens together, police-citizen interaction, abuse of arrest discretion, use of unnecessary force, and corruption—provides a representative sample of this new research/ Writings include those by Egon Bittner, Joseph Livermore, Jonathan Rubinstein, Mary Glenn Wiley, Terry L. Hudik, Richard E. Sykes, John P. Clark, Donald Black, Paul A. Pastor, Albert J. Reiss, Jr., Ellwyn R. Stoddard, John Van Maanen, Arthur L. Kobler, The Knapp Commission, and Richard J. Lundman. In addition, each section includes a list of further readings. In a readable, lucid style, Professor Lundman succinctly integrates the selections through essays introducing each section. These essays present a coherent theory of police behavior—a theory that focuses on the patrol officer and disputes the conventional wisdom regarding the origins of police conduct and misconduct.
