Les questions sur l'éthique et la morale houellebecquiennes sont traitées de manière à ce que la situation conflictuelle des deux soit nettement éclairée. Le contexte psycho-politique, le consumérisme et les psychopathologies des individus houellebecquiens passent également la revue ainsi que les réflexions sur l'art. D'autre part l'intertextualité est mise en lumière de façon variée, pour ce qui regarde la présence de la Bible ou bien dans une confrontation avec Sade et Émile Ajar. Finalement la réception de l'œuvre est amplement discutée dans un panorama de la nouvelle vague de critique universitaire dont bénéficie l'enfant terrible des Lettres françaises
